AHEAD OF A DROUGHT
The meteorological services department has predicted a normal to below normal rainfall this coming 2018/19 season. This speaks of a high probability of a drought in Zimbabwe. A drought has a huge bearing on most farming activities in Zimbabwe since agriculture is mainly reliant on rainfall. In the wake of an imminent drought, Total Farm Solutions seeks to remind farmers of the important points to take note of in order to survive the drought season.
A drought year has an impact on both cropping and livestock activities and as such all farmers should take heed and plan accordingly. Irrigation is no longer a priority but a necessity. Over the past years, the rainfall pattern has been very erratic. The distribution of the rainfall has been a major parameter affecting the planning and production of many field crops. In order to prevent the impact of the pending drought situation the following practices should be taken note of:
1. Invest in irrigation
2. Save water at all costs.
3. Water harvesting
4. Mulching
5. Tie ridging
6. Good crop selection
7. Good varietal selection
8. Timing of planting
9. Staggered planting / production
10. Culling cattle or livestock
The above points will help us farmers to reduce our losses from a drought situation.
